Critically, because a guardianship had been initiated here in Michigan, we were able to work with the Texas court to transfer the child’s pending immigration status hearing from Texas to Michigan. This kept the legal proceedings close to where the child would be living and the family who would be caring for him, turning a complex multi-state legal challenge into a coordinated path forward.
A probate court hearing has now been scheduled, and we are confident the child will be permitted to remain with the West Michigan family—safe, stable, and surrounded by people who chose to show up for him. The jurisdictional transfer means his immigration proceedings will be handled closer to home, with the support of a family standing beside him.
